How do you hit Semi-Western Forehand?
Semi western grip is the most common way how to hold the racket
handle to hit a forehand spin stroke.
Also, Semi western grip is a regular way how to hold the grip
with the left hand (non-dominant) when playing two-handed Backhands.
Why?
Because with “non dominant” we actually hit kind of Forehand, while our
the right hand is kind of “helping” by making the “lever” mechanism.
How do we hold a proper semi-western grip? What is the easy and simple
way to find semi western grip, without getting any confusion?
I will present you two ways of getting the semi-western (forehand)grip:
1st way:
1. Under the racket’s head, there is a racket’s “neck” or “triangle hole”, right?
2. Hold the racket with your left hand and go with your index finger
all the way through the “hole”.
It will look like you want to play with shorter racket where the “handle”
is just under the racket’s head.
3. Just take your index finger ” out” and slide all the way toward
the end of the handle.
In this position, you are actually holding a semi-western grip and it is
the surest way how to feel the right grip. Under your palm, you can
feel the exact configuration and the shape of the handle.
The same way you can use to check how to hold with left hand your “left forehand”.
2nd way:
Other way of explaining the semi-western grip is by taking the racket’s
end – “butt”. The racket’s logo shows, right?
1. Hold the racket vertical
2. The racket’s butt is like an octagon and you can name each of eight
sides (bevels) by number or by sides of the world. The top one would be no.1 or North, right?
3. Well, for forehand we actually need part no.”2″ or “North East” part of the handle,
if we are right-handed.
4. That convex part of the handle should fit into the concave part of your palm,
exactly between the bases of the index and thumb.
This means that your left hand for two Handed Backhands should be on bevel “8” or “northwest”, right?
As you see, it is simple as everything else in tennis.
Some photos and video should make the explanation even more clear.
